On 6 October 2025, participants of the International Scientific and Practical Conference “The Gem and Jewellery Industry Today and Tomorrow” spent a full day at the Kaliningrad Amber Combine, the place where the legendary Baltic Amber is mined.
The special tour titled “A Day at the Amber Factory” offered a rare opportunity to follow the entire journey of amber from its extraction deep within the quarry to its transformation into exquisite jewellery pieces. The group explored the interactive “Amber Chamber” and toured the factory grounds.
They also visited the jewellery production workshop and took part in a hands-on master class, creating their own amber bracelets.
A highlight of the visit was the descent into the Primorsky quarry, where participants observed the amber mining process first-hand. Standing at the edge of the pit, they learned how this ancient stone formed over millions of years, through the gradual hardening of tree resin.
This experience gave them a deeper appreciation of amber’s true nature. By understanding its ancient origin and the unique conditions under which it formed, they began to see it not merely as a souvenir, but as a tangible fragment of geological time – a rare and living capsule of history.
A new group for this programme will be announced in spring 2026! Let us know if you would like to join the tour by reg@gemmology.online
